This project focused on the information needs of adult cancer patients as they go through radiotherapy, and what happens during patients’ one-on-one meetings with their care providers. I conducted in-depth research with patients, radiation oncologists, and educators, and synthesized my findings into a software concept aimed at improving treatment information understanding and retention in patients. This project was conducted in collaboration with three Swedish hospitals: NUS, Karolinska, and Akademiska. In this project, I led a team of Interaction Design students from UID in researching the child and parent radiotherapy journey, and synthesizing the research findings into design concepts aimed at helping better prepare children and their parents for treatment, and decreasing anxiety during treatment. This project resulted in the implementation of a rigorously developed service design concept, HUGO, for 1.5 years into the three collaborating hospitals. This project was conducted in collaboration with the Radiotherapy Department at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS) in Umeå, Sweden, where I worked closely with the radiotherapy nurses intimately involved in the patient treatment process, researching the negative impact that the treatment technologies can have on patients.
